PORTFOLIO
GUIDELINES

Are you an aspiring Wizards of the Coast artist?
Submit your portfolio today for review! If your
skillset is a good fit for one of our projects, we’ll be in touch.

General Portfolio Guidelines

  • No limit to the number of pieces, but aim to show at least 6 examples of your best and most recent work
  • Do not password protect your portfolio and do not share any work that is currently under NDA
  • Test that your portfolio is accessible, any included links are working, and images are high enough res to view fine detail
  • Always remember your audience and cater to them when you can; we’ve included recommendations for specific portfolios below (both by discipline and by brand)
  • If you’re working in multiple styles, be sure to categorize or label accordingly so we know your range (i.e. having both an illustration section and a character design section on the same website if you do both)
  • Make it easy for us to contact you with clearly posted email or email submission form built directly into your site
  • Fan art is welcome! If you have a lot of fan art, we recommend including original compositions or unique scenarios that show you can expand upon an existing IP and capture likeness well
  • Sketches and other process work encouraged
  • Portfolios including artwork created with generative AI will not be considered

Illustration

  • We are looking for strong fundamentals in anatomy, mature rendering, materiality, use of color, proportions, figure-ground relationship, believable lighting, creative use of camera angles, etc. across a broad range of styles
  • In addition to final illustrations, we’re also looking for representative examples of your whole creative process from references, thumbnail sketches, color comps, roughs, etc.; it’s important to show that you can take feedback well and pivot direction as needed based on the vision of an art director

Magic: The Gathering (MTG)

  • Magic art is often expressed through high fantasy realism but also branches out into more stylized, bespoke artistic treatments, so artists of all styles are encouraged to submit
  • When working with a brand partner’s IP, their feedback and approval are critical and can dictate the style of art needed for a card set
  • Regardless of style, we’re looking for cinematic, dynamic, evocative pieces that will read well at card size (we only have a 2” window!) and support the card’s game mechanic

Dungeons & Dragons (D&D)

  • We’re looking for illustrative pieces that tell a story and invite the viewer into a world that sparks their own imagination
  • When working with a brand partner’s IP, their feedback and approval are critical and can dictate the style of art needed
  • D&D art is often expressed through high fantasy realism but also has many tones and art styles that can vary even within a single setting, so artists of all styles are encouraged to submit

Concept Art

  • Ability to showcase thought process and problem-solving skills in addition to your final product is a must
  • Inclusion of references, notes, studies, different angles, material exploration, and why specific design choices were made in the portfolio are recommended
  • Include iterations and sketches in addition to final rendered pieces; we’re looking to see that you can ideate on a vision (often not your own) and produce options that are fresh and inventive, pushing the concept forward

Cartography

  • We’re looking for everything from tactical, isometric, and geographic maps, as all are key to our game play; styles can vary within those categories from playful to utilitarian to highly illustrated and beyond

PORTFOLIO SUBMISSION TERMS

Current as of May 17, 2024

We’re excited that you are interested in submitting your portfolio for review as a potential freelance artist with Wizards of the Coast! For your submission to be accepted for review, you must agree to these Portfolio Submission Terms (“Terms”). If you disagree with any Terms, you may not submit your portfolio for review. Failure to read through or comprehend these Terms thoroughly does not constitute a waiver of any of the Terms. If you have a question about any of the Terms, please contact us before submitting your portfolio.

  1. WE WILL NOT SHARE YOUR INFORMATION. When you share your portfolio and personal information, you are sending it securely to our servers and we will not share any information we receive with anyone outside of Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro.
  2. YOUR WORK MUST BE YOUR OWN. You, as the submitter of the work in the portfolio, are representing that you alone are the creator and owner of each piece of submitted work in the portfolio (unless your portfolio clearly indicates those pieces that are the product of multiple artists; see #4 below) and that you have not infringed on any other creator’s work. You are also representing that you did not use AI tools in the creation of any of the submitted work. Wizards will not consider any portfolio that contains work created with generative AI.
  3. YOUR WORK MUST BE ACCESSIBLE. Should your portfolio contain work that is locked by password or other means, or if it is discovered that your work was shared despite being under NDA, we cannot consider your portfolio.
  4. MULTIPLE ARTISTS. You may not submit work that is the product of two or more artists, even if you did the majority of the work yourself. Your portfolio must be yours alone so that we can adequately review whether your work is a good fit for our projects. If your portfolio is hosted on an outside website that contains collaborative works between yourself and one or more other artists, those works must be clearly indicated on your website so that we can properly review your own work.
  5. FAN ART. We encourage and accept fan art, including fan art created for IP other than Wizards’. However, your portfolio must include more than fan art alone. If there is a question as to the origin of any fan art in your portfolio—as in, the style used for the included fan art varies greatly from your other included work—we might decline to consider the portfolio.
  6. NO GUARANTEE. We sincerely appreciate your submission and will review any portfolio that we receive that adheres to these Terms. However, note that submitting your portfolio does not guarantee that you will be contacted for work.
  7. RESUBMISSION. We understand that your portfolio will evolve (and so will our project needs!), and we encourage you to resubmit your work for consideration if:
    1. Your last submission was more than six (6) months prior, or
    2. Your portfolio contents have been significantly updated, showing new variety in style or additional skills, since your last submission.
  8. ABUSE OF THIS TOOL. Abusive behavior, such as spamming the submission form, continually submitting portfolios containing highly graphic, obscene, or offensive material (as determined by our reviewers), repeatedly contacting any Wizards or Hasbro employee for information on the status of a submission, or any other form of harassment, may result in your email address or IP address being blocked from future submissions. We reserve the right to respond to any abusive tactics as we deem necessary, though we sincerely hope this never happens!
